Although St. Gerard was born in the region of Basilicata, he became the patron saint to mothers and is patron saint to many Neapolitans, especially in America. St. Gerard is buried in Materdomini in the Avellino province of the Campania region.
Newark Celebrates the 119th Annual Feast of St. Gerard Maiella
This year makes the 119th Annual Feast of St. Gerard Maiella will take place from Friday, October 12 through Tuesday, October 16 at St. Lucy’s Church, 118 Seventh Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. St. Lucy’s is home to the National Shrine of St. Gerard.
St. Gerard’s intercession is sought for children, unborn children, women in childbirth, mothers, expectant mothers and motherhood. The St. Gerard Novena and Blessing with the Relic will take place during the week preceding the feast. The Novena begins at 7:00 pm.
On Friday, a special Mass giving thanks to fire, police and medical responders will take place at 7:00 pm. Saturday Masses will be held every hour from 7:00 – 11:00 am and at 12:30 pm and 6:00 pm. The Solemn High Mass will be consecrated at the 11:00 am Mass. The procession will leave the Church at 2:00 pm.
On Sunday, Masses will be held at 8:00 am, 9:00 am, 10:00 am, 12:15 pm and a solemn High Mass at 11:00 am. Sunday’s procession will leave the Church at 3:00 pm.
Entertainment for the Feast will be provided by RPM Entertainment from 8:00 – 10:00 pm on Friday, October 12. On Saturday, Ray Cetrell will take the stage from noon to 2:00 pm, with Gerard Esposito performing from 3:00 – 5:00pm and Jersey Sound from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm. Sunday’s entertainment will be provided by Charlie P. and CRC Production NJ from noon – 2:00 pm and again from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm. Jerry Pease will entertain from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. On Monday, RPM Entertainment will be back from 8:00 – 10:00 pm.
