The Dante Alighieri Society Scholarship Awaits Its Deserving Scholar

The Dante Alighieri Society of Jersey City Lori Sorrentino Hennessy Scholarship will be awarded to one deserving full-time post-high school female student who is pursuing a course of study or degree in Education. It is a one-time award of $5,000 payable to the scholarship recipient, to be used for education expenses during the upcoming academic year, (2019-2020).

To be eligible, the applicant must be a legal resident of New Jersey, a female of Italian ancestry and must be entering, or enrolled in a full-time course of study in an accredited college or university, or entering or enrolled in a full time college or university graduate program. All applicants must also be working towards a degree in Education or related fields (such as an additional certification). Selection criteria will include academic accomplishments, short essay submission, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities and awards and honors.

The candidate’s requirements: A woman of Italian descent who demonstrates her personal strengths and understanding of Italian culture and family values. Graduated from high school with a satisfactory G.P.A. Enrolled in a certified undergraduate or graduate program (or has received an acceptance letter to a junior college, full time college, or university with intent to pursue a BA, MA, PhD. EDD in Education). Provide a resume and relevant information on her present and past accomplishments. A resident of New Jersey (the candidate does not have to attend school in New Jersey). Submit a written essay supporting her decision as to why she wants to pursue a career in Education. The awardee will be required to speak at the on June 10, 2019 at the Dante Alighieri Society Meeting, at which time the Scholarship will be presented. The award will be announced June 1, 2019. The recipient will be notified on or before June 2, 2019.

The scholarship will be granted based on academics, candidate’s character strength, and a strong essay. An education committee made up of Dante Alighieri members will perform a review of all candidates’ material. Failure to complete one full semester with a satisfactory GPA will null and void the scholarship, requiriing the scholarship funds must be returned to the Dante Alighieri Society of Jersey City.
