On Saturday, May 25, the USO and Richmond County Orchestra RCO will present a free indoor musical tribute to our veterans at 8:00 pm at St. Johns University Gym, 300 Howard Avenue in Staten Island. The Orchestra will be presenting patriotic music from the periods of the Revolutionary War, Civil War and World War II. Following the concert, there will be a wine and cheese reception. Funding for this Memorial Day weekend event is provided, in part, by Council Members Steven Matteo and Debi Rose.
In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Forest Avenue Memorial Day Parade, members of the U.S. Island Veterans Org. have decided to switch the date of the parade. This year, the procession between Hart Boulevard and Decker Avenue will take place on Sunday, May 26, beginning at noon, where thousands are expected. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the American Legion and earlier this week, Hero Park in Tompkinsville was decorated with American flags for the centennial remembrance of World War I.
