Mike Piazza’s No. 31 to be Retired By Mets
This summer, Mike Piazza will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. The New York Met’s have announced that the team plans to retire his number 31 this season. Piazza becomes only the fourth Met to have his number retired, but he is only the second player after Tom Seaver (41). Managers Casey Stengel (37) and Gil Hodges (14) have also had their numbers retired. It is fitting that these are the two players who closed Shea Stadium and opened Citi Field. The ceremony for Piazza will take place at Citi Field on Saturday, July 30.
In a statement, Piazza remarked, “It is such a tremendous honor to have my number retired alongside the great Tom Seaver. My time as a Met was truly special and I want to thank Fred, Saul, Jeff and the entire organization for this incredible gesture.”
