VENICE – Romantic Venetian gondola rides may soon be at risk thanks to a influx of flying fish. The deep-sea creature has recently been sighted in the lagoon area surrounding the city of canals. “At first, we couldn’t help but be skeptical,” said Mauro Bon, biologist at the Museum of Natural History of Venice. “But then we saw the pictures. Those are definitely flying fish.” Flying fish belong to the exocoetidae family of marine fish. The species had never been seen before in the area, yet dozens of reports have surface from as far as the downtown Giudecca canal, a clear sign of the changing environment.
