Chairman of the Board

Frank Sinatra was considered the Chairman of the Board of the Rat Pack. Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop were board members.  However, the “Chairman” nomenclature originated in the late 1700s.

Back then, many houses consisted only of one large room, with a single chair as its only furniture. Commonly, a long wide board was folded down from the wall and used for dining. The “head of the household” always sat in the chair, while everyone else ate sitting on stools or on the floor. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge – The Chairman. Today business we use the expression or title Chairman, while the others sitting in the room are known as board members.
