070915-cronaca-7The difficult task of cleaning Rome’s hundreds of fountains may become a bit easier.

The Vatican has proposed using a bacteria-based technology that would utilize microorganisms capable of removing everything from smog to glue. Aside from being non-toxic, the technology also significantly reduces the cleanup’s environmental impact and costs.

The procedure has been successfully applied to numerous buildings, including Rome’s Casina Farnese, where bacteria was able to remove corrosive glues that had been applied over the years.
