16th Century Treasures Unearthed

Draining operations in a Genoa port have turned up a treasure trove of period cannon and other artifacts, including five British cannons dating back to the 1600s, a bronze falconet light cannon from the 1500s manufactured in Venice, two German machine guns and several antique anchors.

The falconet bears the brand of the Alberghetti family of smelters active in Venice in the mid-1500s and would fetch some $500,000, according to experts.

The “catch” will be housed in city museums after restoration, port authority officials said.
